Olympus' Website indicates that Studio or Viewer software is needed to upgrade (a good idea), whereas the camera ships with Master software. It is possible to use Master, following these instructions (which please read before acting on them; you'll see why):

(I guess I'm replying to myself, but here goes):
It's my strong impression that the autofocus is working better in my E-300 after the firmware upgrade.

I cannot comment on the 300, but a firmware upgrade for the E-1 was specific to better low light focusing.
i noticed a real difference in wedding situations.

My note about the second update for the E-330 also applies to the E-300: there's a new upgrade for it as well.
