Under-exposed strips using Nikon EM

Hi,

I have my Nikon EM for more than ten years. I took a lot good pictures with it. However, during a recent trip to the Yellowstone NP, I found a number of pictures showing under-exposed strips or bands (like light greyish bands) Most time these bands appear at the left and right end of the pictures. One thing drove me really craze is that such a band always appears on the 22rd frame in almost every film (in only one of 15 rolls this band appears on the 23rd frame) (I was using ISO 200 24 exposures films). Does anyone here know the reason for that? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Your EM may be suffering electronic shutter woes. No disrespect intended, but the EM was a entry-level camera built to a considerably reduced materials standard than most Nikons, to try and fight the endless hordes of cheap plastic Canon and Minolta pricepoint cameras that promoted features over high-quality internal components.

The idea was that you'd use the EM a few years, then move up to a higher-quality Nikon body. The EM was never intended to last for 20+ years and to prove the point for every dead FM or FE/FE-2 there are probably 25 or 50 dead or dying EMs out there. Since higher quality used Nikon SLRs are now readily available used in excellent condition, I'd trade up if I were you.

I agree. It is not worthy to fix an EM. It is the time to move up to a DSLR nikon now.

If you decide to stay for a while with a film camera the FM3A is not bad. Used four to five hundred KEH. Takes AIS lens. Also the price of F3HP has come down. If you are ready for digital that is alright also.but you do still have some film choices. Monte Johnson.

Well, that's a pretty large investment, of course, and with the (un)reliability of many new DSLRs you may not be gaining much over the EM if you're wanting something that will last several years. Why not wait on the digital, save some serious money, and spend $200 or so on a good mint Nikon FM2n or FE-2. You'll be gaining a lot more capability in manual mode (won't have to shoot on aperture priority all the time, yay!) you can use your existing lenses without worrying about crop factors, etc. and the camera will be a lot longer lasting.

And next time, visit camerarepairforum.com and check out which cameras show up regularly with more-or-less the samet types of breakdowns. Then you won't make the mistake of buying another EM.

Good information in this thread. I have a Nikon EM (bought on eBay) that exhibits the same traits. Good to know the information passed along here.
