just bot a video cable for my Nikon D40 (didn't come with one ---- cheap) to display photos on my 52" Sony TV - quality is terrible? using NTSC? am i missing a setting? thanks for your help.

You are correct in assuming the video output from a digital cameras is low-resolution NTSC, which on a very large TV display will look poor in quality.
The only way to display digital cameras is to use a computer to produce higher resolution video slide shows recorded on DVD discs. The best of this I have seen is creating a slideshow using the Acrobat slideshow option in Photoshop.
