I just bought a Nikon D40x SLR digital camera. I am looking for a telephoto lense, under $500 that will allow me to photograph birds and other animals long distances away. Any suggestions?

You might consider the Sigma APO 300mm F2.8 EX DG/HSM but this new version is very pricey, so maybe look for the older, slower APO f/4 400mm, which you may find used at a reasonable price.

If autofocus is important, make sure that whatever lens you choose will autofocus with the D40.
