Telephoto lense/

I was wonder what the definiton of zoom would be on a SLR camera 40-150mm
compaired to 12 x zoom. I am thinking of getting a canon Digital SLR. I photograph wildlife and need a really good zoom and macro.

The x factor is the multiplation of the widest focal length that equals the longest focal length. A 3x zoom, for example, would be a 25mm-75mm zoom. A 12x zoom for the same wide end be a 25mm-300mm.
