An alternative would be to scan the negatives and stitch them together in PS.

If you are talking about the APS feature, it was done by cropping the top and bottom of the negative off and and printing the remainder on a wider sheet of paper. When this feature was set on the camera, it recorded a signal on the negative. The printing machine read the signal off the negative, did the cropping and printed on a wider sheet of paper. It was mostly a gimmick.

With scanning and printing from a computer, the same thing is easily achieved. Simply scan the whole negative and crop to whatever format you want in the image processing application of choice, and print it. The only difference is that you - not the camera - determines the crop.

For inkjet printers that have no support for roll paper, you can still buy a roll and cut whatever length you need, setting a custom size in the printer driver, or print on a standard sheet of paper and cut off the excess.
