Rachel is starting her senior year at Carolina Day School, a private school
in Asheville. Her photography studies began at home, where she was introduced
to the art and craft by her mother, Wendy, who is the school's photography
teacher. Rachel also studied in middle school, where sixth and seventh
graders were required to take photography courses. "I think photography
should be required in all middle schools," Rachel says, citing the
benefits of documenting class work as well as school trips.
A photo course last summer at the University of North Carolina at Asheville
taught her darkroom techniques, but she credits her mother for her familiarity
with the handcoloring that helped produce these images.
