Kinda getting started out with portrait photography, and have been advised to use some softbox flash lighting...just dont know what to look for ...can anyone help?...not trying to break my bank either.

Couple of solutions depending on what you are using for a lighting source and which camera, which you haven't stated.
You can't use on camera flash. You need to choose a light source and a modifier, like a softbox or white umbrella. More details in the answer will depend on the camera and flash you already own or intend to purchase.

If you have a manufacturer's flash, you can use a remote cord and bounce the flash into a white umbrella. For example:
