Should I buy the kit or camera body only?

Hello, I am new to SLR's (upgraing from my Powershot SD 400 point-and-shoot). I am shopping around for my first digital SLR and I need some help.

I am looking in to the Canon XTi (although still open to other options) and don't know if I should buy the kit or the camera body only. I don't know much about lenses so any advice is greatly appreciated!

I do a lot of landscape/nature photography, and I take lots of shots of my cats and dogs, and I would like to get into portait photography too. I'm also going on a road trip to the Badlands/Grand Tetons/Yellowstone/Glacier National Park in May, and I'm wondering whether or not the kit lens would be alright for this. I've heard good and bad about the kit lens and I don't know what to think of it.

So, should I buy the camera body only and get a nicer lens or just buy the kit? Is there a nice all-purpose lens for a low price?? Money availability is an issue here.

I don't know about Canon, but if you consider a Nikon dSLR, I can highly recommend the 18-70mm lens. I've used this lens on my Nikon D70 for more than 2 years almost exclusively. The 18-70mm range works well for landscapes, portraits, etc. This is a much better choice than the 18-55mm lens that lacks the extra tele range. The only time I use another lens is for close-ups where I use a 70-210mm zoom with T5 and T6 close-up screw-on lenses.

A lot of people really seem not to like the kit lens for some reason. I've seen some outstanding pics from them, mind you they're my pics(overall mine are kinda crappy no matter what I use ).

It's like anything else in life, you just need to learn it's strong/weak points.
