It's difficult to give a meaningful response without more details. Can you post some more info? Indoors or outdoors? Were you shooting with flash? Was the subject standing in front of a wall or other large object? If you could post a link to an image, that would be very helpful.

I assume you're using the built in flash. That's what's causing the shadows behind the subjects. Either turn off the flash, move the subjects further away from the background or use an external flash away from the lens.

With digital, many turn off the flash, use proper white balance, such as tungsten and such. -- However, Pretty much of what was said is true. You may also try fill flash setting? But, this may be of help?

If you look at the properties of the photo file or open it in a Photoshop/Paintshop program you can look in the EXIF information to see if the flash was on and fired. It's does sound like the flash, but it might be something completely different.
