Scanner for archiving negs & photos

Hi I'm a new member to the forums and have a few questions.

I'm looking for a scanner to convert all of my parents old photographs and I would like to scan my old negatives. Are there any scanners that would be good for both old pictures and negatives?

I don't know much about scanner software either. Is there some that are more beneficial to photo and negative scanning?

One last question, are Archival gold DVD's the best ones for long term storage?

I have an Epson V750 (I think that's the designation) at work and it does a good job on reflective as well as film. Don't know what your budget might be, but this one cost somewhere around $700 2 or 3 years ago. I haven't kept up with what's now available, but I can recommend the dual purpose Epsons.

The October 2010 had a review of the Epson V600 by David Brooks. If you just want to scan for saving the images for the screen or for small prints, the basic Epson V600 would probably work. If you want to make larger prints, the recommended software in the article is probably necessary.
