Samy's Camera online vs. B&M prices

I went looking for a Canon 430EX flash unit. After pricing the item, I went to my local Samys brick and mortar store. I knew their in-store prices were probably higher than their online but I had no idea. Online price $240. In-store: $300. That's a 25% mark-up.

Even ordering from B&H with next day shipping, I'd probably save $40 over the in-store price (including taxes).

Seriously, why even bother having physical stores if there is such a financial disincentive to buying anything there? (Yes, I realize that some people like having the personal service, but that's a heck of a premium to pay for the privilege...)

That's the way the market is. not everyone goes online to buy. About half of the popoulation of the US doesn't own a computer.

Many brick and mortar shops will at least attempt to meet the on-line price. I recently bought a 12-24mm lens from my nearby Nikon dealer, after scanning prices in on-line Canadian stores. I printed off the page with the best price, and they not only met it, but specifically did not factor in the cost of shipping and handling, which beat the price significantly.

I also used the same approach when buying the D200 earlier, and also got it at the lowest advertised price. I might add that the service at this store is very personal, and they are quick to fix any problem that might arise.

Always worth asking - at worst, all they can say is "No". It is certainly worth a bit to be able to deal with a human being, face to face in case there is a problem.
