The only slide scanner currently available that has as high (higher) resolution is the Plustek 7200i. It, however has a lower Dmax than the Minolta 5400 II. It does very good scans, which may be improved further by the just announced Lasersoft SilverFast Ai 6.5 upgrade.

Thanks for the reply. On the Sony site, the best you can do is send an email; they have no parts information. You can also request a repair. $181.00 mimimun plus parts.(If they have them.)
I can tape the latch shut, but worry about it coming undone in the scanner!
Time to start researching for a new scammer!

Personally, if all that is involved is fixing the latch of the carrier, it is not all that complicated a mechanism with just one part plus the spring retention. Any repair person good with small products and implements should be able to fashion a new latch tab if it is broken. If the one I have should break I would not hesitate to repair it myself. Particularly considering there really isn't any scanner available comparable to the Minolta 5400 2. Currently the closest you can get to its performance is the Epson Perfection V750M Pro.

If I could find the spring and small pin, I could probably fix the carrier. However, I was able to buy new parts from Sony's Kansas City repair facility. Sony is using Konica Minolta's old digital products 800 number for repairs and service and from there you get the number to order parts.
The new slide holder cost $46.00 and came to 56.00 with sales tax and shipping. Don't know if it was a mistake or not, but they sent me two new slide holders and charged me for one!
It's comforting to know -- at least for now -- that parts are still available for this scanner.

Sony is really quite exceptional in providing service and repair, so I am glad in this case its good reputation has been upheld. Thanks for posting the the information and phone number, as well as the fact parts are available for the Scan Elite 5400 II.
