Filters, on some really WA lenses can cause vignetting.

The person who told you this sells filters?

The 1.5x "magnification factor" does just the opposite because the area of the digital sensor is smaller than the 35mm film area. As a result you have less light fall-off at the corners.

Thanks for the info guys, and yes it was a sailsman that told me this. So my AF lenses should work just fine then?

If you shoot outdoors in bright sunlight, you might consider a
Circular Polarizing filter. The size you need is the size that screws onto the end of the lens opposite the camera body. That size will be printed on the lens.

Larry's a pro and I respect his reasoning for NOT using a skylight filter for protection, but I live in a place where flying sand is an issue so I do use one. In my environment they last about a year before I need to replace them. I find it cheaper than replacing the lens, although I do remove it if I'm shooting something particularly special.

I second Chip Doc's opinion. I live near the ocean and a lot of my pictures are taken where there is salt sea spray.
I normally use either B+W or Heliopan filters, so image degradation is not much of an issue.

Had the thread continued I would have said that I recommend using a filter in rain or snow or blowing sand. But you beat me to it...

I have to shoot an artist's booth (for digital submission and 35mm slides) this weekend at an art show where the weather is going to be questionable. Originally I was going to use my D200 with the 12-24mm zoom, but I don't have any 77mm fliters. I'm now going to shoot with my CoolPix 8400 (built in 24mm lens) and a small tripod. There's a big difference between exposing $400 worth of euipment to the weather instead of $3000 worth.

i use a skylight or uv filter does this really affect the picture? As I am always learning some times backwards but i learn. Oh yes and photo classes don't work I'm a trucker so I'm gone all the time.

Yes, but it depends on whether the degree of image degradation is noticable. It also depends on what you intend to do with the image. My feeling is that if I spend thousands on high end camera equipment, it would be self defeating to degrade the image at all with an inexpensive piece of glass. That's why I always use a lens hood and am very careful to shade the front elements from the sun if possible.

But for a casual shooter that isn't as particular about image quality, if a filter makes you feel more secure, no one is telling you not to use one.

I remember when all the Nikon lenses took 52mm filters and tuperware desert caps fit the lens hoods perfectly. I still keep the hoods attached with caps and have almost never used filters on those lenses, unless the filter did something optically that couldn't be done in camera, like a polarizer.

thanks larry i guess i buy a lense hod for my 28-135 and try it because when i crop i do notice a slight ghosting in the image could this be caused by the uv filter 28-135 is usm lense.
