This is relatively easy -- if the sensor of your camera has filterd to remove IR, then there is nothing that can be done with and IR filter attached to the lens, because it will just procuce an overall red. Whereas, if you have one of the earlier model cameras that came out without the filter, or with a camera that has had the filter removed you will get the effect of IR with the IR filter in place as if you were using IR film. Then the photo would be edited to show the IR effects. There is another place in these forums where a similar question was asked and answered. good luck
What I do is first Auto Levels and then Desaturate and adjust Contrast to taste. CS4 no longer has Auto Levels so I adjust my white and black point in Levels manually.
Here's an example though I haven't had time to touch my infrared converted CoolPix 8400 in two years:

Thanks, OK so in regards to the advice from Random if i were to send my camera in to have the IR filter removed, am i dedicating this to IR photography or is it still good for everyday photos??
No. It would be IR only. It should be an older camera no longer needed or purchase one specifically to have it converted. And before doing that you would need to contact whoever you intend to use for the conversion to see if that model camera makes a good infrared camera.
In case you do not know cost involved; you may want to check this out:

You may be better off buying a used camera that did not have IR filter on sensor.
WOW, ya, can be expensive, so what are some good cameras to look at for IR photos??
I will just purchase one strickly for IR
Before purchasing look at the list of cameras they can convert on the Life Pixel web site. Then give them a call and ask questions about what they recommend you should purchase.
Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.
