Photographers are notorious gadget hounds, always seeking some new little item that will help them in their quest to produce even better images. Following are unusual items that should help fill the average photographer’s need of something new and different.

Want to be able to see exactly what your D-SLR’s LCD is seeing, from over 300 feet away? And be able to wirelessly control and fire the camera also? The new Gigtube Wireless from Aputure lets you do this while viewing the image on a bright 3.5” color LCD screen. The anticipated price is $250-$300.

Dot Line Corp.’s Cam Caddie Owle stabilizing device is intended for use with an iPhone to assist in producing videos that don’t jump about due to excessive camera movement. A number of new accessories are available for the original Cam Caddie Scorpion Stabilizing Camera Handle, including an accessory mount and an accessory shoe wing so several items can be attached above the camera.

If you work around or in water and have an iPhone with you, there is an ewa-marine housing that is transparent so you can see inside to operate the phone and you can even hear through it. The MSRP is $19. A new ewa-marine underwater housing for many models of compact digital cameras has an optical port for the lens and lists for $69. RTS is the US distributor.

Need to be certain your camera is perfectly level? Interfit has the Seculine Action Level that slides onto any camera shoe then shows a green LED when the camera is level. It’s available for $40—for $49 you can get a similar model with sound. A slightly larger Cross version checks the level from side to side plus front to back and lists for $65.

Nite Ize products are not specifically photographic, but several new items would be helpful for many photographers. The SpotLit LED is a small round (1.25” diameter) clip-on light. Push in the button once to get a steady light that assists in locating things in your camera bag in the dark, push twice and it begins blinking as a caution or warning light. The eCLIPse is a small clip that can be easily attached to soft, thin, and slippery fabrics such as a coat or jacket and will remain there until an “auto-lock” is disengaged. It offers a method of carrying your mobile devices safely, is made of stainless steel in three finishes, and sells for $12.
