The Big Landscape: Mountain Views

Our Picture This! Assignment this month was "The Big Landscape: Mountain Views." Readers responded with photos made from East to West with some of the most beautiful peaks in our land, and with some from overseas as well. Of course, folks from out West consider Eastern mountains not much more than foothills, but any feature that rises above the horizon counts in our book. The aim of this assignment was to show much more than the mountain itself, with the architecture, environment, and framing given as much importance as the grandeur of the mountain itself.

Old Smoky

The gently rolling hill of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was the subject of this monochrome study by Jim Plogger. He photographed with a Canon EOS 10D and Canon 24-80mm lens; exposure was f/6.7 at 1/180 sec. He converted to Grayscale mode in Photoshop CS.

Cathedral Rock

Marcus W. Reinkensmeyer used a Hoya .6 ND filter and B+W polarizer to achieve the long shutter speed necessary for the depiction of flowing water and elimination of glare from the water and rocks. He worked with a Nikon D70 and Nikkor DX 18-70mm lens atop a Gitzo G 2220 tripod and Manfrotto 486 head. Exposure was f/22 at 1/2 sec.
