Picture This -- Our Next Assignment

Panoramas
A panoramic picture reveals a field of view wider than encompasses peripheral vision, that which we sense at the corner of our line of sight but usually don't see without turning our head this way and that. While strictly defined as an aspect ratio of 6:17 or so, panoramas can include anything from a strong horizontal crop of a normally photographed subject to one that's made with special camera/lens combinations that can range as wide as 180Þ, or a full 360Þ! In addition, so-called panoramic modes on digital cameras allow us to stitch a sequence of images together, in either horizontal or vertical mode. Digital has helped redefine the panoramic genre and made it available to more photographers than ever before. So send us your panoramic images made either with or without stitching, and share your wide field of view with all.

This photograph made inside New York's Grand Central Station with a Canon digicam was created by stitching together five separate images. Overlap was about 20 percent for each individual shot.

It is important that you read and follow these guidelines.
We need to follow this procedure because of the large volume of images we receive.

1) Images sent to us cannot be returned. You retain complete copyright over the images, but do grant us permission to print your image(s) in the magazine and on our website, www.shutterbug.com.
2) Because images are not returned please send a quality print or duplicate transparency. We will not accept or view images on CD, ZIP, or any other electronic media.
3) Images will be selected on the basis of content and technical quality. Please mark your outer envelope with the topic of the month (for example, "Wide View").
4) Enclose a short caption with the image stating camera, lens, film and exposure, plus location. If you are submitting an image with a recognizable person we must have a model release or signed permission from that person to reproduce their image in the magazine and on the website.
