I own a Nikon N65 that has a pop-up flash unit that works well. However, I often have occasion to need a more powerful flash. I own a Nikon SB23 flash unit that I am trying to get to work on the N65. The camera manual says it will work, but I have not been able to get it to work properly. In some modes, the pop-up flash doesn't "see" the shoe mounted SB23. In others, the pop-up stays put, but the auto-exposure adjusts to ambient light readings in the room. Does anyone know how, or if, I can use this flash on this camera?

Hi Tony, sorry no one has responded. I own an N65 and I haven't had this problem. Anyone else?

Is it possible that the flash is going to sleep between photos. Then taking the first picture won't work but will wake up the flash and the second will work. You can try turning the flash off and on between shots.

It's possible that the hot shoe contacts are a little dirty, so that one part of the flash is speaking to the camera but the firing mechanism isn't. Try a little 0000 grade steel wool.
