I just bought the nikon n70s and i already had a lens it is a quantaray for nikon AF 28-90mm1:3.5-5.6 macro, my question is this, i was recently at the ocean and i had it on auto and was trying to focus on a sail boat and it would not focus at the maxium of 90, if i pulled it back a little and then it would focus and then i could zoom to the fullest and it would seem to focus and i can then take the picture...can someone tell me why this is happening? am i doing somehting wrong? I am an amatuer but love to take pictures and hopefully will be taking a class or 2. I really love this camera. are these lenes okay or should i try to "pony" up and only buy nikon lenses. any assistance would be great if you want to e-mail me i can be reached at spdd12@aol.com just put in the subject shutterbug answer..
thanks alot!
My best WAG would be that there was not enough light at 5.6 max. focusing aperture and that combined with smallness of the subject in tthe frame/less contrast, the camera could not do the deal. Backing off the zoom probably allowed the aperture to open up to F4, which allowed enough light to come in for the contrast detections.
Next time, when a camera reduses to focus, put it on MF.
Ronk,
Or get a camera brand that does not have the limitation!
david, but she loves the camera.
Actually, selecting just the center focusing point rather than the multi point would probably help a bit. I leave the E-1 set for the middle point as a matter of routine. The 2.8 glass and IR help these old eyes.
My firast AF camera was an Oly C5050 digital. One summer we went to Howe Caverns in Howes cave, NY and took eome snaps. The IR focusing aid works in the dim light of caves.
Hi
while i am not an expert, who's to say this won't happen with another camera, Ronk i will try your suggestion because i know i will go back to perkins cove in maine. And since i just bought it and already had lenses for it, i am not returning it, i have some great photo's that i have already blown up to 8x10 and given the to some friends at work that say i am in the wrong profession...
Thanks again
Sue
"some friends at work that say i am in the wrong profession..."
Sometimes I think I'm in the wrong profession also. Wanna trade jobs? I can use the health insurance and a pension.
And what profession are you in??....I am not sure how to take your reply...doesn't relate to the question at hand..and just for the record, my husband carries the insurance not me...
Thanks
Hi Sue,
Another factor could be the location of your focus-point on the boat. If you were trying to focus on the sail, there might not have been enough contrast for the focusing sensor to work properly.
As Ronk stated above, using the center sensor works best in many cases. Additionally, on the D70s, the center focusing sensor is the only cross-hatch sensor (providing both vertical and horizontal data to the focusing system) - another good reason to select it.
Bob
