Hi Paul. I just ordered a D70. The main reason I went with Nikon is because I have quite a few really nice lenses already (I shoot with an F5). All the testing I read through had me torn between the Canon 20D and the Nikon D70. This is my first digital SLR so I decided to stick with Nikon. Good luck!
To start with...do you already have any SLR lenses? What brand! The camera is the cheapest part of the SLR setup.
Get the one you are most comfortable with is a good start, but I know several people with the Canon...and it's difficult to use compared to the Nokno D70 I have. Once more, the D70 has all the features turned on and you have to use a Russian Hack to access the Canon settings. Once you do this it is a very impressive camera, but still hard to use.
As for the differance between 6.1 and 8 MP, you won't see it unless you are printing a billboard and then perhaps not. You have to quad the MP count to double the details; or a 6.1 would need to be 24.4MP.
Tks for your input ,I dont have any lenses at all,Have anold 35 mm Ricoh camera and a canon digital sure shot that I take boating with me and I dont have to worried about it.like I said it feel more confortable the Nikon D70s on my hands than the canon so I think I will go that route.
Thanks again for your input!!!!!!

I just bought the nikon D70s and Love it, 6.1 is plenty for me. check on line forthe camera i found it cheaper. if not Ritz camera is pretty good on prices.
I've had feedback from several people that played a little with the Rebel and did not like its feel; they thought it was mechanically less solid than the D70. Based on this feedback and the fact that I had already some Nikon lenses, I opted for the D70 and haven't regretted it a bit.
You're in the Nikon forum but I recently chose the D70 over the 20D (Anything less than 20D from Canon and there is NO contest).
D70 is easier to use and felt better in my hands. It has advantages over 20D but 20D has advantages over D70. For those issues, it came down to how you use the camera if one fits your needs a little better. You are buying into a system of lenses more than anything b/c that is where you will sink your money long term. I've had my D70 for three months and love it. The 20D is a nice camera and beats the D70 on some issues but don't let the 6.1 vs 8 MP be an issue. Like stated earlier, that is not a big deal unless you printing very large photos. You have to jump to the 12-16MP class of the D2X and EOS 1D to really jump quality.
Hi Paul,
I bought a D-70 last year as a back up body for my D-100. The problem is, I have barely touched my D-100 since then! The new D-70s is even better than my D-70, although mostly in small details such as the ability to use a cable release and a larger LCD on the back, and prices are very good. Since you don't have any lenses, be sure to buy the camera w/ the 18-70 DX kit lens. This is a great "one-lens" solution, and will get you through many shooting situations until you can afford to add lenses to your bag. Also NEVER buy into the "Magnification Factor" garbage you may see or hear about. It doesn't exist. It is really a cropping of the available image because the sensor is smaller than a 35mm negative. So a 50 mm lens is just a 50 mm lens with the same angle or field of view as a 75 mm lens. Enjoy and welcome!
Hi All,
I am on a budget. I really like D70s. However, I want to buy the SB 600 flash as a remote flash. Alternatively, I can buy D50 and two flashes (SB 800 & SB 600). Could someone help me make this decision?
Thanks in advance.

if you want to hire a boy to do a mans job, then get the canon.....otherwise hire the man.....
I was trying to make the same decision as you and had almost settled on the D50. Then I read additional information on the use of the D50/D70S in combination with the SB600/SB800. To use wireless flash with the D50, you need an SB800 on the camera or attached by an SC-29 cord to work as the master controller. With the D70S, the built-in flash can work as the master controller. Given the price difference between the SB600 and SB800, getting the D70S with the SB600 is nearly the same price as the D50 with the SB800. The D70S also has quite a few more capabilities than the D50. Those things made the D70S the easy decision.
I originally chose Nikon over Canon because at the time Canon had just changed their lens mount chopping-off all previous model owners. That did not give me a good feeling for Canon's loyalty to their customer base. I chose Nikon and have not looked back. All my glass is Nikon. Any new camera body will have to accomodate them.
I have just purchased my first Digital, a D70S. I was very leery about the quality of the image from any digital that could not match my film/SCS-LS-4000ED scans @ 4000ppi. The D70S has amazed me as to the quality of image that can be printed! With the use of PS and a good interpolation s/w I can obtain 12X18 (13X19) prints rivaling those from the scanned film.
My only complaints are:
1. the reduced size of the sensor and the resulting magnification (Canon made the right move in this area as far as I'm concerned).
2. There are too many control options. Do I really need all those options? I'm not sure yet. But, I do find it confusing to remember all of the ones I have found a use for so far. I'm constantly having to pull the manual out and fiddle with it. With time and use this complaint may go away.
All in all, I recomment the D70S highly. My choice was between the D70 and the D70S. The D50 was never a consideration.
I bought a D70s and I love it to bits. I have and had three other Nikon cameras. (F55,F65 and F100) I still have my F100 and hardly use it because its overshadowed by the D70s. But I'm thinking of the D200 already. Hey you wanna but a F100. LOL
