I am having a problem with what is supposed to be TTL
operation. The camera came with a 'Kit' lens; Tamron Model
177DN (AF28-80 F/3.5-5.6 Aspherical). I am just wondering
if you have to use a Nikon Lens, for proper operation of
the TTL. I am hoping that someone can shed some light on
the subject.

You might check the manual for the lens to see if it had the a Nikon "D" designation. The "D" sends the flash to subject distance the meter to assist the Matrix system find the best amount of light to push out of the flash.

No, the flash does not need a Nikon brand lens.
"A problem" is not very descriptive. What problem are you having?
