If you have a manual, it should tell you which controls vary shutter speed and aperture. It's probably either two separate dials, or a dial for one function, and a button held down to convert the dial to the other function. If you don't have a manual, you can probably download one from the manufacturer's web site. It's hard to be specific, not knowing what camera you have.....
In manual mode look at the display on top of the camera. Next to the battery indicator is your shutter speed. To change it just rotate the dail next to the top screen. If nothing is displayed just press the shutter half way and the display will activate. To change ap just hold down the +/- button next to the power switch and use the same dial. The ap setting is displayed next to the shutter speed on the screen. This info is also displayed in your view finder.
Also it does help to read the manual, this camera has a ton of options.

In addition to the manual, there is a great book out there by David Busch. it's called the Nikon D50 field guide - or something like that. You can find it your local bookstore or on amazon.
I read it cover to cover - it's much more informative than the manual that comes with the camera...
Good luck!
Mike
