Nikon D50 - black and white?

First let me warn you - I'm new to DSLR photography. I have couple of questions that I'll break into separate threads, but thanks in advance for putting up with my newbie questions!

OK, first question:

I recently picked up a Nikon D50 as I get into DSLR photography. It does fantastic pics, but the one thing it's missing that I really wish for is the ability to capture black and white. I know I can translate a color image into a B&W image in photoshop, but it's always nice to be able to see what you're taking while you're taking it.

So is there a way to capture B&W photos on the D50? Filters? Certain lenses? Anything?

Hopefully this isn't too much of a dumb question!

There are a few options when converting to black and white in your editing program. You can desaturate color or convert to gray scale. Then there probably are fancier plugins for Photoshop that do the work for you.

my C5050 will do b&w capture as does several of the Canon slr's. The b&w I get is really lackluster with the camera. I have read in other forums that the same is true of the Canon slr's. Use PS to get the b&w!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that getting "better" results is easier in Photoshop. But is it even possible with the D50 to shoot B&W?

I didn't see anything when I read it - but that doesn't mean the camera doesn't have that feature. As you probably know, these manuals are far from complete

Even if not in the manual, the selection HAS to be in the menu, if at all.

The Nikon D50 has no black and white setting and when you think about it, it would be pretty useless. Why put a limitation on what you shoot when you can modify the dickens out of your images later on?
