Nikon D-70 Flash Question

I have a Nikon D-70 that is three years old. I just got one of the new Nikon 18-200 mm vibration reduction lenses and will be using it most of the time.

This will sound like a real amateur's question, but I'd very much appreciate any help you may be able to give me. I live by the ocean and take a lot of beach pictures in bright sunlight that would be better for a fill-flash. We also are about to go on a European trip and I expect that there will be several places where I will also want to force a flash.

The problem is that I don't know how to force the camera to flash. I suspect that it is impossible to do in the "auto" mode, but can I make it flash in the "program" mode? Can it be made to flash in any of the other pre-set modes like "portrait," "close-up," or "landscape"?

Thanks in advance for whatever you may be able to tell me.

Gary, I have a D70S and can activate the flash at any time by pressing the speedlight button on the left side of the viewfinder. You have to be in P, S or A modes, though, not auto.

You should consider using a reflector for fill instead of the flash. The camera will automatically compensate and the quality of light will be more pleasing than direct flash on the camera.

I recommend something like this soft gold/white reversible PhotoFlex LightDisk:
PhotoFlex LiteDisk

Like any soft light modifier, the bigger the better. It collapses down to a quarter of the size and can usually fit in the back pocket of a camera bag.

I agree with you Larry, and I have often used reflectors in the past. Unfortunately, you need assistants or stands to hold them in the correct postion. An amateur out shooting may not have the additional people or equipment necessary. Fill flash then becomes the best option.
