does this lens have macro capabilities? If not does anyone have a recommendation on a macro for my D70s that won't break the bank?

I don't know about the G lens, but the original 28-105D has Macro capability, getting down to 1:2. The compromise is that you have to get very close to your subject, but for occasional use, it is very nice to have. That is one of the reasons I haven't replaced it for my D100.

The 70-300 can be used for Macro with the 5T and 6T "filters". Actually thin magnyfing lenses.
