Hey everyone. I'm sure you all get this a lot but I am new to the photography community. I plan on focusing primarily on race cars at the track and was wondering if someone could suggest cameras/lenses. Thanks so much!

Hi Christi I do alot of shooting at Lime Rock Park Race track and I am using a D70s with a Nikon 70-300 and have been geting great photos.
Most sporting events Canon rules.. Next time you are at the track look mat all the white/off white looking lenses,, Yes eat you heart out nikon users CANON RULES
Are you sure that they aren't Minoltas? (chuckle, chuckle)
Or maybe they just couldn't afford better equipment.(ha,ha,ha,ha,Chuckle, chuckle,ha,ha...)

Right now the sure bet is probably going to be Canon or Nikon DSLR and film SLR cameras. A thrid choice would have been Minolta too bad they crossed Honeywell. If you aren't in a big hurry take a look at Sony's new DSLR line to be introduced this Summer. If you were not aware Minolta sold their camera assests to Sony. There has been some rumors about June. If buying digital take a look at the burst rate (frames per second rate) , shutter lag time, and start up time. You want the camera to powerup fast, you don't want to miss the action because of poor shutter response or because you only are able to catch 2 to 3 frames per second instead of 5 to 9 frames per second.
If you are doing this as a business then I would lean towards Canon's EOS 1D MARK II N. The Nikon D2Hs is getting a little long in the tooth. While the burst rate is high on th D2Hs the shutter lag time is a little slow as well as the startup time as compared to Canon. I'm sure this will improve shortly. The next choice whether for business or pleasure would be the Canon 30D or Nikon D200. I pesonally am thinking about the Canon EOS 5D but then I'm not into action photography. The 5D burst is 3 fr/sec thats no slouch but not 5 fr/sec. I like the viewfinder size a whole lot more. If you don't think that you need the higher burst rate take a look it. The price is close to the Mark II N.
If you are considering film, better hurry the choices are getting slimmer. You can still get Canon's EOS; 7N, 7NE, 3, 1V, and 1V HS. In Nikon the F100, F5(imported) and F6 are availalbe. These are at B&H for now. B&H is a fast place to check on availability, price and specs.
Glass, a lens, you get what you pay for is the general rule. If you can afford the better glass then buy it. You'll probably want a 24/75 F2.8 and a 70/200 F2.8 to start with if you can afford them. Try to get IS (Canon) or VR (Nikon) lenses. If canon and Nikon prices are too high for now look at Tamron SP, Tokina ATX, and Sigma. Sigma lenses are reverse engineered, what works on todays camera may not work on tomarrows camera. They are pretty good at rechipping their lens for you if it is not too old. If you are wanting a longer lens than a 200mm be sure to look at least at monpods for lens support.
Well my Harley is a callin me. Like I said earlier if you are not in a big hurry see what Sony has to offer. Oh, don't forget your computer needs for Photography.
