New Photo Show: Andy Warhol’s Photo-Aesthetic And Beyond

The Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College has announced its new exhibit titled: Andy Warhol’s Photo-Aesthetic and Beyond—on view from September 11 to November 1, 2014. The museum’s large collection of Warhol art (including the famous Campbell’s Soup and Electric Chair photo-silkscreen prints), recent gifts from the Andy Warhol Foundation and loans from other collections will be at the heart of this event.

In the planning stages since 2007—when the Andy Warhol Foundation first donated photographs to the museum—this exhibit will explore Warhol’s use of photo silkscreen, Polaroid, silver gelatin prints and black and white print media to create his famous “photo-aesthetic” style of Pop Art.

In an effort to counter the realism of photography and to dramatically highlight the impact of popular culture on our daily lives these color silkscreen prints were crafted using Warhol’s special technique. A Polaroid image silkscreened onto paper (or canvas) and richly embellished using brightly colored silkscreen ink.

In addition to the portraits of Muhammad Ali and Sitting Bull, the exhibit will also feature the prints titled Brooklyn Bridge, Cologne Cathedral and Ladies and Gentelmen. Paired with the exhibit will be four large-scale digital photographs by Malaysian-born Chinese artist Chee Wang Ng, which pay homage to Warhol. Ng employs a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to reevaluate and challenge Chinese culture while at the same time raising awareness about the true diversity of Chinese culture and traditions.
