just got a new canon digital slr xs for my birthday and was wondering if i made the right decision in buying it . also was wondering what is a good photo editing software program , good but not to expensive
Your Xs is capable of shooting an award winning photo, you are the limiting factor in the team, not the camera. Use it, use it, use it and it will repay you with great images if you are willing to learn and grow in amateur photography.
The software that came with your camera includes photo editing software, but in case you bought your camera second hand, try Picasa3, its a free Google download and so simple I can even use it. Its intuitive, very easy to learn, and its experience will help you move on when you move to Photoshop Elements or the full blown PS program.
If you use Picasa you can open a free account and post your pictures there for your friends and the world to see. I like to make slide shows out of my photos:
Here is one -

Good luck, enjoy your new camera, read the manual at least five times, take books out of the library, read and watch videos on the net, display your photos for critique while keeping an open mind. And don't be afraid to take advise that everyone else ignores, your photos will love you for it - use a tripod with landscapes, do use neutral density filters and circular polarizers, do learn your exposure compensation dial and experiment, experiment, experiment.
And lastly, only show your best photos to friends and the world, they'll think you're good!
