I'm looking for a small digital camera to do some experimental time lapse photography. A normal DSLR is too big (I have a Nikon D200 that does it). What I need has to be small and light with 8-10mp and if possible, vibration reduction. Ricoh has one expensive model that I know of (gx110), but I'd like to shop around. Nobody seems to offer it anymore. The last camera I had with the feature was a Kodak DCS290. Seems kodak dropped that feature on the mutitude of models it has out right now.
You might try looking for a Coolpix 8400 or 8800 used. Both have some very nice features like an interval timer, timed long exposures, continuous drive and so on. I have both a D200 and D300, but the 8400 would be the last camera I would sell.
First of all, stop looking for vibration reduction. It doesn't work with the camera set up on a tripod. What you do need is a camera that you can set on B (for Bulb) where you can open the shutter and keep it opened until you want to close it, preferably with a locking cable release or black card to hold in front of the lens. You hold the black card in front of the lens while releasing the shutter. Remove it when the camera steadies down and then do the reverse when the time exposure is over.
