You shouldn't let ambient light effect exposure when shooting with strobes, otherwise you loose control of what you're getting. I recommend blackout shades if shooting during the day, or stopping the lens down and shooting at the maximum shutter speed that the camera can sync at. Any lights you leave on should be dim enough not to effect exposure.

The studio I worked in early in my career as a pro commercial photographer was a daylight studio with frosted glass wall about 12 feet high and 30 feet long. The owner and builder of that studio was one of Hollywood's premier studio photographers and photographer of and for countless movie actors, actresses and performers in music and theater. After I went on my own I built or adapted three daylight studios and although I had both tungsten and electronic flash, I only used artificial light at night or the rare occasion of a cloudy day; and in addition when I was on staff at PhotoGraphic magazine the studio that was made available to me was by good luck and fortune a daylight studio with south facing windows floor to a 16 foot ceiling.

Of course I live and worked in Hollywood, California, and it is an ideal climate for a daylight studio. But on one of several visits to Milan, Italy I found that the city contains a number of daylight studios and one of the first ever constructed for photography, as well as daylight photo rental studios that are very popular.

I would suggest doing some research (Google) on daylight studios and consider the possibilities. Particularly for photographing people the daylight from large diffused windows is the most flattering, and easy to control with reflectors, gobos and black flags, much easier than electronic flash illumination, and should be an ideal kind of lighting for digital capture.

BTW I had a very popular HP Books how-to on lighting book that featured two of my daylight studios, but the book has been out of print for at least 15 years.

So, it really doesn't matter what kind of light I have in there? Just turn them out and rely on my strobes? Is this what I am getting from your comments or am I totally off? This is all a learning experience for me and I need all the advice I can get.

So getting back to the original question.

I have two different sets of lights. I have a power pack strobe kit with two 1000ws packs and four heads for use in a studio I've recently set up in the half of my living room that we weren't using. With my wife's permission, I set up a Bogen auto pole system with three different color nine foot seamless paper rolls (white, black and gray) and two adjustable height poles for using Varitone graduated backgrounds or 54 inch paper for photographing smaller objects.

I also have a four strobe (Nikon SB800's and SB24's) system with small umbrellas, light stands, clamps and Pocket Wizards for location work.

In all cases I use the lighting with the camera exposure set on manual and adjust exposure from viewing the files on the LCD or computer monitor. I base my exposure on using a combination f stop and shutter speed that prevents ambient light from effecting exposure.
