I moved your question to the infrared forum because you indicated interest in shooting digital infrared by asking about the R72 red filter.

If you are looking for a traditional black and white infrared look, auto levels and then desaturate and adjust contrast.

If you want to keep color in the sky (some people like the blue sky with infrared foliage), you need to do a custom white balance which will leave the sky red, and invert the blue and red channels.

I have a similar problem / question. I am using the Canon Digital Rebel Xti / 400D with a R72 IR Filter. I have tried taking long exposure shots, upwards of 2 minutes and setting custom WB on my camera to get the IR look. The Photo i get does not come out magenta, like it is supposed to i guess, it comes out in deep reds and browns, i can adjust the exposure time to lighten it but it doesnt work when I go into Photoshop with the RAW file and do the channel mizing and curves alterations, i end up with an entirely blue image, not just the sky being blue and everything. I can start a new post if required.

Does the camera you are using have any infrared sensitivity? Have you read of other photographers using it for infrared without having it converted? Just using a red or infrared filter doesn't necessarily give you infrared.

The custom white balance should be done while pointing the camera at green grass, which should appear white in the viewfinder if there is infrared sensitivity.

I have seen posts of people at least claiming they use the Canon 400D / XTi without being converted with IR filter to take IR Photos. And I did change the WB while looking at foliage so the green came out white, once i figure out posting an image I will put one up of my result straight out of camera.

Sorry but I don't see infrared in your image. When converted to black and white, the only thing that's white is the snow, not the foliage.

Ya, thats what I thought, so a longer exposure would not change the problem would it? Is there any solution without altering my camera for hundreds of dollars?

I find all this interest in fauxe infrared curious considering when real infrared film was still available very few had any interest, not enough to keep it in the marketplace.

Obvuiously, IR filters do nothing but make whole image red on cameras with IR filters in place. This is why many have cameras converted to sense IR -- for a little under 300.00 or sometimes more, one can have the conversion done -- then you can shoot IR till ... .
