<!--color--> ok - so I'm going to take the plunge and purchase a L lens after 10 years of shooting with a canon SLR - I currently shoot with the 30D, and although I want to upgrade that to the 50D, I decided I need to upgrade my lens selection first. I currently own the 18-55mm that came withe the 30D, the 75-300mm and the 28-135mm, which is the one I use the most. I am considering the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L or the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L or one of the primes - maybe the 35 or the 50mm f/1.4. I want to focus on portraits, although I do want it to be versatile, which keeps me from thinking I can get a prime.
If you own the 24-70, can you comment on its uses and if it is really that much better than my 28-135? Any input would be great!!
Thanks!

I have quite a few L lenses but my favorite lens, a relatively cheap non-L 50mm F1.4, is a permanent fixture on my 1DS. I also have a 70-200 f4L non IS that rarely comes off my 30D body. Some people love it, some hate it. I like it because it is much lighter than my 70-200 f2.4 IS and is sharp as a tack.
On that light, I would suggest you rent or borrow a few lenses before making the plunge.
