Hi exactly what settings do you use to take your IR photos on your Dimage 7

With my Dimage 5, I use the BW setting and an IR filter. You also can use a 25R filter with not quite as good results.

What I mean't by settings was can I used full auto mode for focus, white balnce, exposure etc. or do I use Program AE if so what settings? Sorry I'm a newbie to all this but I really want to try it. I'm waiting for my Hoya R72. Thanks for any info you guys can give me.

The filter one uses for IR will effectively disable any TTL auto focusing since it is so dark you can hardly see through it, much less auto focus. As far as white balance is concerned--you should be shooting in the grey scale setting which does not depend on any white balancing.

The Dimage 5,7, and newer do not have an IR mark for focus.

What you will have to do is first focus without the filter and then place the IR filter on your lens then switch the camera to MF to hold the setting. You will have to retain that setting to take the picture and hope your

depth of field will cover your image's depth well enough.

Remember that this is not truly IR photography--you are essentially "faking it" by using a nearly opaque red filter to block any reds from your sensor.

True IR is with IR film which only records the heat given off by an object.

You also will have to manually estimate exposure since the

IR filter negates your auto exposure system. Bracket wildly--and retain your settings for future estimated exposure.

Actually, IR Film and digital cameras are both sensitive to the same type of light. Specifically light in the Near Infrared (NIR) spectrum. Thermal IR falls in the Far Infrared (FIR) and is not visible to the naked eye, IR Film or silicon-based CCD/CMOS sensors.

I'd like to add some comments. Some cameras, including my Nikon D70 will focus just fine in sunny weather with the Hoya R72 infrared filter. I believe this is also true for the Nikon D50 and D100. Further, I believe, for those cameras that have the choice, that it is better to set the camera to color mode, not the B&W mode. This will allow for channel mixing in the image editor; how you channel mix will have an impact on how your final image will look, a capability that I would not want to loose by using the B&W setting.
If your camera doesn't focus with the IR filter on the lens, than I think it would be a good idea to make a series of test shots to find out how the focus obtained without the filter needs to be adjusted for when the filter is on.
IR filters do not block reds, but let red light through.
Some cameras, like my D70, handle IR exposure very well; I do not have to compensate, while my son has to compensate his Pentax *ist DS by up to +2EV.

thats weird my minolta D7 2001 model focuses fine with the R72 Hoya filter.
here is a image hand held, color mode, Minolta D7 5.2mp, Hoya R72. Auto focus.
crypt seems to be jumping out of the picture. the DOF is fine as a story telling DOF.
