I don't know if this will help or not.
I've found that Noritsu printers are more neutral than Frontier. My local Costco uses a Noritsu and my local Sam's Club uses the Frontier. That means my black and whites are always more black and white looking when I print at Costco. When I get black and whites done at Sam's, they usually come out with a magenta cast and I have to add green to compensate.

Desaturate the TIF and save it as a maximum quality JPEG and either try local big box store printers or try a few places you can upload to. If it's really important, getting a few extra prints made to insure accuracy should be no big deal.

Which do you think are the best on-line places? I've used Kodak Gallery.... other good ones?

Anyway, I contacted White House and plan to have them print a batch of photos for me.

Question: Is it good or bad to have more pixels per inch when you have a photo printed? I have very large photos and crop them. I have the option of changing the pixel per inch number. Is there any advantage to doing this other than reducing the file size? (My uninformed guess is no, more data is better, but I wonder if more data could actually "gum up the works.")

Every output device has an optimum setting and if the person doing the printing uses a RIP, it automatically sizes the file for the output device.

But sizing your file and making the resolution 300PPI will cover you whatever output device is being used.

More data cannot gum up the works. But I am surprised there is no indication provided on the web site of an online print service provider that does not specify the resolution and format they prefer to receive in print orders. In fact I would be skeptical of a vendor that does not provide detailed information to guide its customers, or is their service quality so minimal it doesn't make a difference?

As usual, thanks for the replies. Well, the question of pixels per inch was for my own knowledge. I am just getting into more "serious" photography (I doubt that anyone wants to take a bad picture, so I suppose everyone is serious!!) and this is really my first foray into a better quality printing. I have gone very slowly with WHCC..... setting up the account etc and am currently in the process of prepping about 12-15 shots (from 8x10s to 4x6s) to check them out. WHCC does mention 300 PPI and numerous other elements to help them print the picture the way you see it. It was a broader question (for example, when I send my pics out for my yearly calendar.) Unfortunately, I am not very knowledgeable and WHCC talks about a lot of elements like white balance etc. Some of it I understand, some I quasi understand and some confuses me. To me, it will be a learning experience!
