What do you intend to use the lens for; if floral macro shorter macros are okay, if for insects, longer macros are better. The "working" distance of shorter lens is... well... shorter, and the longer lens's working distance is.....

I intend on using the macro for general close up shots of bugs, flowers, cactii, and anything that demands close up to show fine detail.

What is becoming one of the most popular macro lenses available is the Sigma 150 f2.8 macro. With bugs you will want longer working distances, better with flash as well if you start using it. The Canon 180 is outstanding but it is significantly more than the Sigma 150. The Sigma 150 is not only an excellent "fast" macro, but it works admirably as a "medium" telephoto as well.
