<!--color--> Just last year I perchased a Nikon D40 and got the original package with the 18mm x 55mm lens I am looking to purchase another lens for it and was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions. My main focus is Macro which I presently use just a filter attachment. But I am also wanting to get into portraitures and other types of photography. I also do shoots at a Rodeo which I created a web page for as well. and the 18 x 55 works well but I want to upgrade so I do not need to be as close to my subjects to get a nice shot. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Charles....
What's your budget? Nikon has a 55-200 and an 18-200. But by using the D40 (D40x and D60) you're limiting yourself to very few options because those bodies require the autofocus motor to be in the lens. Any other Nikon body will give you more lens options. What you really need is something like the 60mm f2.8 macro for both macro and portraits, though it'll be too sharp for portraits and you may have to soften the images in post processing. For rodeo photography, beside what you already have, the 80-200 f2.8 would be perfect but costly. Also take a look at the Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lens. It might fit all your needs if it autofocuses on the D40.

55-200 works well.... if you are at the low end of a budget (like me) I know that Quantaray has an inexpensive 28-300 ... well less expensive .. I have been thinking of getting another D40 body and using a lens on each....
