I'm sure this has been asked 100s of times, but: I have a Sigma 180mm macro, which I often use for portaits of a young lad, shooting from about 20' or more. Is it better to use "limit" or "full" switch on the lens? What, in general is the difference?

The full/limit switch is to make focusing more efficient and faster when not focusing on close-up subjects. For the instance you gave on a distant subject, set on "limit".
