My son fiance is studing Digital Photography and would like to get a system (lighting) so she can used at home ... what you guys recommend (nothing real fancy)... Thanks for your info ,
Paul
Check out Alien Bees advertised on the inside front cover of the December issue of Shutterbug. Moderate cost, reliable and versatile.
I am curious to try these myself. I use Minolta, any underlying issues? Or would it be best to invest in more dedicated flashes for the wireless capability?
Studio flash systems work pretty much the same with any camera system. And by their nature they must be measured manually with a flash meter to both establish a desired lighting ratio between highlight and shadow as well as set your camera aperture for a correct exposure.
Studio mains also can be fired remotely via a remote system or just dial down the the hot shoe flash and use it to fire the self slaved monolights.
Studio mains are also more versatile, iMHO, as there are more ways to modify them.

If nothing fancy I would recommend.
