Lens Help

I am completely new to the D-SLR world. I currently have a point and shoot (Kodak Z740) and have decided to upgrade my camera to a D-SLR. I will be purchasing a Rebel XTI, but where my confusion comes in, is in the lens options.
I do plan on getting the 55mm lens that comes with the kit.
The 10x zoom lens that is on my Kodak is just about perfect for what I use my camera for. What I haven't been able to figure out is what is comparable to the distance of this lens. The more I research the more confused I seem to be getting.

Can anyone help give me a suggestion on what I would need for a versitale 'starter' lens that would still give me that same zoom?

The Kodak specification should be on the front of the lens and would read something like 6.5 mm - 65mm. This translates to 39-390mm in 35mm terms. This OPTICAL ZOOM ratio, if you are including a DIGITAL ZOOM ratio in "10x",
dslr's have no such thing.
With Canon, you would need a 25-250 or so to have an equivalent to this lens.
