Looking for som help finging a good long range zoom lens, i want to get up close and personal with distand objects, what lens should I look for ato fit the D50? (I'm not real clear on what the 18-55mm means on my current lens, explination would be helpful also)
The 18-55mm focal length lens of the Nikon D50 kit covers a range of wide angle to short tele, suitable for the majority of shots ranging from landscapes to groups of people to some portrait work. For most portraits a little longer focal length is prefered, say 70 to 100mm for the D50. If you want more telelens than the 18-55mm you may want to consider 55-200mm lenses from Nikon, Sigma and Tamron. These are specifically designed to work with digital cameras with a smaller sensor like the D50. These lenses will get you close enough for many sports activities and larger wildlife, but not close enough for smaller animals like birds, rabbits, etc. These lenses are less suitable for sports shots at low light levels; for those you will need telelenses with a larger aperture opening to get satisfactory results at lower light levels and prices for these will be significantly higher than the former lenses. Let me know if this information is helpful and don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Excellent advise, I thank you very much for the time and quick response.
You might want to look at the 18-200mm lens. Excellant reviews so far, and a do it all lens. Expensive, though not "Pro level".
