David,

I have a Lacie 319 monitor, Apple G5 2.0 Powermac, Colorvision SpyderPro2,and Adobe CS3 to process my photographs. This setup is 4 1/2 years old.

I love to do portrait photography. Is it time to upgrade
my monitor?

I have followed your articles on color management over the years. I too have had the "prints too dark problem" when using online printers. I know this is probably because the Lacie 319 reads 207.0 CD/m2 instead of the 90.0 CD/m2 you advise. I usually just make a visual adjustment to lighten the image before printing.

When calibrating the Lacie with the SpyderPro2 it recommends
leaving the brightness and contrast to factory default setting. I have lowered the white luminance point to 90.0. The prints were a closer match to the monitor, but I was worried about color accuracy.

Long first post, but I wanted your opinion on my system and improvements I should do.

To answer your question is it time to upgrade your LCD display, I would have to say yes. The reason is technology improvements in pro-graphics LCD displays have moved fast. The 19 inch displays are old designs replaced by the 20.1 inch and larger displays since. Now the current models are in a third generation and the big difference is how much of the color gamut they reproduce,

I just got delivery of a new Eizo Flexscan S2242W that reproduces 95% of the Adobe RGB color gamut, and your 319 probably reproduces little more than 75% of the Adobe RGB color gamut. If you can't see it on-screen it is not possible to control color with your software accurately. And that is very evident to me working with images.

I did not realize the gamut of the Lacie was so small. You are right, I will look at new monitors. I will start with the ones you have reviewed in Shutterbug and from your blog.

I plan on replacing the G5 this year. With CS5,when available, being Intel only its time to upgrade. I've read that you like the Mac mini. Is it still a good option to run the future CS5 and Lightroom 3.0? I am not sure I want or need a MacPro.

The only time I really find I need my Mac Pro is when I am building a large multi-page article with InDesign for conversion to Acrobat .PDF Otherwise it is really overkill, the speed and huge amount of RAM is not really needed except for production work.

My Mac Mini for all digital photography editing is more than sufficient now that the latest has 8GB of RAM available.
