I have been wondering the very same thing! I even posed the question to Konica Minolta's FAQ's page on their website last week, but have yet to receive an answer.
I would like to think that the 7D can indeed do IR photography, but am still searching.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, I would be suprised if your camera CAN'T record images in the IR spectrum. One sure way to find out if your camera can is to aim a TV remote at your lens, depress any button (hold it) and take a picture. If you see the light in the remote your camera can record images in IR. I'm not sure why it not having a AF illuminator has anything to do with IR capabilities but I can tell you that my D100 will AF with an IR filter (in bright sunlight)over the lens. As long as it can detect some contrast it should AF.
