going to the horse tomorrow to shoot some races. never done this before so any pointers on what lenght and type of lenes to use. i have a nikon d-70 with a 28-70 lens. also a 70-300 telephoto. will these lens work for me at the track.
also will i need to use a flash during the day to take the pictures. cause i see the track photographer uses one to shoot the finish line and winners circle.

Those two lenses should work just fine for you, and though the flash might be of limited usefulness to you you should probably bring it along in case you need it for fill.
Be certain to bring extra batteries. It's far better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. A polarizing filter might be a good idea too if you have a bright sunny day.
