I have a little Samsung NV 10 that I like to carry with me. It's all metal & glass, and is a 10 meg camera. Flash is a touch weak, but really takes fantastic pictures. Last night I was shooting some pictures in a jazz club that is horrible to get anykind of a decent shot in. Setup the white balance on low, and an ISO of 100 (shot 200 and 400 as well). For once I was able to get the reds to come out right! There was another guy shooting with a Lieca 35mm camera, and he wanted to know whatkind of camera it was. I let him use it, and he said he was buying one today.

Thanks, I've seen the ads. That's not what I was referring to. I already use the CoolPix 8400 as a carry around camera. 24mm lens and 8 megapixels. But I'm looking for the best image quality in a small format camera. Something that can compare the D2X.

The problem is that a lot of photographers, myself included, will never carry a DSLR and lenses around anymore. There's no limit to what I would pay to have the same quality in a pocket camera with a sharp wide angle lens and iTTL flash capabilities.

The CP8400 fits my photography like a custom made glove. If Nikon offered new model with a D200/D2X DX sensor, I would buy without looking at the price tag.

I read an interview with a Nikon product manager who seemed to be credible, and he said that the mirrorless design was not dead, but rather dormant while they concentrated on marketing dSLRs for the time being. In any case, I don't expect such a camera to be announced at PMA or any other time soon.

Happily, the CP8400 lets me "go where no camera has gone before" time after time, producing great images. With patience and lots of exposures, it is amazing how little light will actually produce superb images at low ISO settings. I was gathering exposures for HDR shots last night in a pizza place lit almost totally with neon! I expect a high percentage of blurs with people walking through the sets, but zeros and ones are cheap. I shot a lot.

It appears that Nikon has announced a CoolPix P5000 with everything (almost) we want except a wide angle lens. 10 megapixels and the zoom starts at 36mm but it has iTTL built in to control the SB600/800. Maybe the next generation will have zoom starting at 24mm.

The D40 is a good little camera but it's only compatible with AFs lenses. this limitation would sway me to the D50. I know you want to keep the size down but if you go for the D80, your control becomes much greater, from the built in flash acting as a master to 2 other flashes to full compatibility with all nikon lenses (even manual focus lenses with no auto metering) But the p5000 with the lens conversion sounds like exactly what you want. Full ttl compatiblility and with the conversion lens attached its a 24mm.

Almost. I want the CoolPix P5000 with a 24mm lens built in so it's a smaller form factor. That's why I went from the CoolPix 5000 to the CoolPix 8400. The add on lenses are nice, but not for everyday carrying around.

I predict that the next generation will be something like the CoolPix P5400 or P8400. By then a 12 megapixel body with a 24mm lens.

The thing I like least about my CP8400 is that 8MP of photosites are crammed into a 2/3" sensor, limiting its sensitivity. Noise is quite dramatic at ISO400. The P5000 has 10MP crammed into an even smaller 1/1.8" sensor. With similar cameras, noise reduction is so aggressive, that the resulting images almost look "posterised".

The deal-breaker is the lack of an articulated monitor. This single design element has done more than any other development over the length of my career, to improve the content of my images.

On the plus side, it will use the old telephoto components, and with the .67x one gets a 24mm equivalent. However, not nearly as wide as the 18mm equivalent I get with the CP8400.

There is no RAW format. Whether you shoot RAW or not, that designates it as a high-end consumer - rather than prosumer - camera. It also lacks the EVF, which I have found useful when changing settings on the rare occasions I venture into sunlight.

In comparison to my CP8400, I see it as a substantial step backwards.

Wait for the D40X. It's a 10 megapixel chip in the D40 body. The problem for me is the lens. I require a 24mm or 28mm, preferring the 24mm as I consider that normal for me. In order to get that wide in a DSLR plus lens, it would require a lot more camera to carry around then the CoolPix 5000 or CoolPix 8400 that I'm currently using. So the D40 body might work but I can't find a lens wider than my 20mm (30mm equivelent) that fits the pocket size form factor.

Another fundamental area that I think can be changed is the entire concept of having the taking lens and the user's viewing display on the same physical unit. That is, why not have a 2-piece digital camera, where the lens and imaging chip is separated from the discplay LCD by a cable (or better still, wirelessly)?

The Zig-View attempts to achieve this concept for the SLR world, and of course costs more than many P&S digicams on its own. The benefit of potentially separating the photographer from the actual image-taking device range from portraiture (where the subject would be less self-conscious if the shooter were not hiding behind a camera) to wildlife (the archtypical tripod-mounted camera next to a bird feeder with the shooter situated yards away so as not to scare off the birds).

While I realize that current LCD displays are not high-res enough to use for actual critical focus and DOF judgements, it seems to me that the ability to separate these two hitherto attached components would make sense. Better still, I suppose, would be a "splittable" camera - think the Coolpix 990 where the hinge could also completely separate and a reel of cable within could maintain the connection between the lens/imaging chip/memory card and the display unit/remote control.
