HELP!! Problem with the 14-45 lens

Hi,

I have an E-300, twin lens kit. For the last week or so my 14 - 45 mm
lens has been playing up. I thought it was me at first, maybe I
wasn't getting the settings right or something. However, today it
packed up working altogether.

When I press the shutter button the shutter won't open. If I press
the button half way to 'auto focus' it seems to try to operate the
motor, but then nothing. When I push the button all the way nothing
at all happens. This is the same regardless of the mode or settings.

If I put the 40 - 150 lens on, the camera and lens work perfectly.

Any ideas anyone?

I suspect I will have to send it back to Olympus, and pay a heavy
bill. I know the warranty has about another week or so to run, the
trouble is that this was a present, and the purchaser has since
passed away. I registered the kit with Olympus as soon as I got it,
but I don't think they'll take that as prove of purchase.

If you know the store that sold it that would help. Certainly I wouldn't give up on Olympus helping.
However, this is not an expensive lens to replace and if it comes to replacing it you would probably be better off upgrading to the 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5, which certainly has more range and quite a bit more speed, but also better build quality and performance in more challenging conditions (such as shooting towards the sun). There are now enough of them around that they can be found used at places like KEH.com. Another advantage that I find relevant is tht it, but not the 14-45mm lens, is recommended for use with the 1.4 teleconverter, which is high quality product.

Thanks Alex,

I was thinking along the same lines about the 14 - 54. The idea of the 1.4 teleconverter sounds even better still, so I think that is probably the route I'll take. Thanks for the 'nudge'.
