Are they legit???

There are a number of sites where you can upload and share pictures. For the most part, they are supported by advertising, though some may have some sort of premium service. Flickr, Fokti, SmugMug come to mind, but there are others. Each has its strengths and emphasis, so if this it the way you want to go, take the time to research carefully.

The upside is that at least on the basic level, these are free. The downside is that you are stuck with the ads, pop-ups, and above all, their page design. A good place to start would be

When I decided to get my own web site, I did not want it to look like tens of thousands of others on these sharing sites, and I did not want my work marred by tacky ads, banners and pop-ups. My internet service provider supplies 10MB of web space to every broadband customer. I quickly outgrew it.

I discovered that a large international website hosting company is located here, about 10 minutes away from where I live. They can handle anything from a family home-page site to the biggest commercial sites. Prices start at $25 per year for 40MB space. Of course, you can always increase the space as needed and they have offered a number of specials over the years, so now I have far more space than I currently need, and for very little money.

Since I had zero experience in web-design, they were extremely helpful in my first days. They rarely need to do maintenance that takes my site off-line, and I am warned weeks in advance. They schedule it for early morning hours when traffic is at its slowest. They also got me my web domain and handled every aspect of getting me on-line, up and running. I have zero complaints. The BIG advantage is that I have total control over my site. I bought a good web-design program and found that building the site was easy. Now I have a master folder with all my design elements and an empty page that I duplicate whenever I get the idea or feel the need for a new topic. It only takes a few minutes to drop in a picture or two, write the captions and upload it to my site. Since I use the same page for almost everything, my site is consistent in style. I use this folder for anything from individual pictures to essays and tutorials. Anything where I want most everything on a single page is done this way.

Photoshop and Elements both have automatic web-portfolio generators, which I also use. There are quite a variety of templates from which to choose, and you can determine the colours on the page, font and picture sizes. They automatically size the pictures and generate the thumbnails and then generate the index and the individual pages. I swap in my standard logos and graphics and it is ready to upload. Very slick.

It took a while until I was satisfied with the design, and I have redone some of my early topics. Since I create the topics in folders, and upload the whole folder, it is only a matter of swapping the new folder for the old. Very simple.

When you browse my site, it opens to a gateway page, with a description of each topic and a thumbnail to catch the eye. Every topic page has navigation buttons to get you directly back to the gateway page, making it fast and easy for visitors to get around the site. When my site changes almost daily, I have a link at the top of the page that will take you to the most recent major topic.

There is also an "Ephemeral" page that is constantly changing, where I place examples that explain things that come up in forums. It also serves as a gateway page to minor topics.

This has been great fun, and I have had a whole lot of positive feedback since it began in late 2001. With the experience I have gained, I can quickly react to a question, and pop a new page in place to answer it. The site is very dynamic, and constantly being added to. The fact that there are no loose files other than the gateway page, with everything else in folders, keeps the structure simple and easy to understand. If I were starting from scratch with what I know now, I would do it in exactly the same way!

Being able to do that is the most important reason to get your own web site. Additional benefits are being able to design the theme of the site to fit your personality.
