I just purchased a D50, and am going on safari (at heathrow now!!!) I am having trouble getting the autofocus to work. The lense is set to A, and the body switch is set to af. The dial is et to AUTO. This should be it. But it is not working!!

When i go to the help, and the detailed setup I should be able to set the autofocus feature at the number 2 and number 3 points. These are greyed out. At number 14 (AE/AF switch) the AF tab is set to on.

Even if I reset to defaults it is not working. Any help or step through would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to have spent a grand to screw up this trip.

Lesson number one: Take the time to become familiar with your equipment BEFORE you walk into a once-in-a-lifetime situation!

I wish I had some more practical advice for you, but I'm a Canon guy. There are plenty of folks with the D50 around here though. I hope that some of them spot your note in time to be of help. Enjoy your safari, whatever happens!

I guess i would be too late for you but anyway check the program dial not all functions work on every program however I think auto focus does. Is it a kit lens?

Is your lens set to the smallest apature( highest F number ie F22)? With the Nikon D50 you can't change F stops on the lens. It is only done with the camera body either in auto or with the dial button. Good luck.
