My daughter is beginning to shoot event photography such as weddings to earn extra money at college. I would like to get her a good digital SLR for christmas. She has several 35mm Nikons and an assortment of lens. It would be nice if she could of course use those lens. She shot a wedding today and mentioned they did not want flashes going off during the ceremony. Can I get some suggestions on what would be a good purchase for her? I'm looking at somewhere around $1000.
It depends on the lenses she has. If they're autofocus lenses, then a D80 would probably be a good body. If they happen to all be AF-S lenses then you could even get her a D40x. If they're manual focus lenses, then you'll need at least a D200 to allow metering with them. Unfortunately this is above your $1000.00 limit.

as much as you would like to surprise her, this is a purchase she needs to be involved in, or just get her a gift certificate/set a limit on your cc to a good retailer like b&h or something. If she is serious about doing weddings with no flash (very common with many churches) she most likely will be needing an upgrade to some faster lenses as well (at the least a couple of f2.8 lenses to cover portrait and wide angle ranges, which will set you back about at least a grand also for nikon or sigma glass). if this investment is to occur as well it might be wise to just completely upgrade or build another system from scratch as she can leaving her older nikon as a back up/second camera on ready, if she is really that serious about doing them long term...not that I wouldnt love for someone to give me a dslr as a gift, regardless, you rock!
