Just a quick question. I was taking pics at a kids football game this am and was using the digital zoom on my Canon A540 point and shoot digital camera. Upon printing them out this aft, I noticed the pics that I used the zoom on, were a little hazy. Almost as though I used a diffusing filter or soft light filter. The rest of the pictures were crystal clear. I checked the lense and it is clean. Just wondering if someone else had the same problem. Thank You!
A "digital zoom" is very different from your optical zoom and it is a bit of an illusion. It achieves its apparent magnification by cropping the picture and then enlarging it through interpolation back to full resolution. Thus is is taking ever less and less information and spreading it wider and wider. With the 4x digital zoom, you have the equivalent of a 1.5MP image blown up to 6mp, so yes, it will probably look rather poor.
The same thing can be done with any image processing program after the fact, just by cropping what you want out of the original exposure taken without the "digital zoom".
Thank you Larry for the quick reply! Your answer makes sense to me. Thanks again, Al
